What can you buy with a virtual debit card?
A virtual Mastercard or Visa works at any online merchant that processes standard card payments — which covers the vast majority of e-commerce globally. The card number, expiry and CVV are entered at checkout exactly like a physical card, with no additional setup.
Subscriptions and recurring services are a common use case: Netflix, Spotify, Disney+, Apple TV+, and YouTube Premium all accept Mastercard and Visa. A virtual card works for the initial sign-up charge and for recurring monthly billing as long as the card has sufficient funds.
Software and SaaS tools are another strong match. Services like Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, GitHub, Notion, Figma, Adobe Creative Cloud, and AWS all bill through standard card payment. You can use a virtual card for a one-time purchase or to maintain a running subscription.
Online shopping — Amazon, eBay, Etsy, ASOS, and millions of Shopify storefronts — works the same way. Travel bookings on Airbnb, Booking.com, Expedia, and KAYAK accept the card for hotel reservations, flight searches, and accommodation payments.
Gaming platforms including Steam, PlayStation Store, Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games Store, and Nintendo eShop accept Mastercard and Visa. Digital content purchases, game pass subscriptions, and in-game currency are all supported.
The key limitation: virtual cards cannot be used at physical point-of-sale terminals or ATMs. Some platforms — notably PayPal, Venmo, and certain money transfer services — may restrict prepaid card types. Check a merchant's accepted payment methods if you are unsure.
Is a virtual debit card safe for online shopping?
A virtual card is significantly safer than entering a physical bank debit card number online. When you pay with a physical debit card, you expose a card number that is directly linked to your bank account. A compromise at the merchant level — a data breach, skimmer, or fraudulent site — can result in direct access to your bank funds.
A virtual card is isolated. The card number delivered to you is separate from your crypto wallet and has no connection to a bank account. If the card number is compromised, the maximum exposure is the value loaded on that card — not your broader financial accounts. There is no physical card to be lost or stolen.
Privacy is a secondary benefit. When you pay with a bank debit card, the merchant receives card details that can be traced back to your identity through the issuing bank. With a crypto-funded virtual card, the card details are not connected to your name, address, or government identity — only to the blockchain transaction used to fund it.
Best practices: keep a note of your card details securely, do not share the CVV in untrusted environments, and use the card on HTTPS-secured checkout pages only.
Virtual card vs entering your real card number online
Every time you enter your bank card number at an online checkout, that number is stored by the merchant — often permanently. Major retailers like Target, Marriott, Equifax, and hundreds of others have suffered data breaches exposing hundreds of millions of card numbers. When a stored card number is exposed, fraudulent charges can appear on your bank account within hours.
A virtual card sidesteps this entirely. When you enter a virtual card number at checkout, even if that merchant is later breached, the compromised card is a standalone item. Your real bank account or crypto wallet is untouched. At worst you lose the remaining balance on that card.
Beyond security, there is a privacy dimension. Real card numbers are linked to your legal identity through your bank. They can be used to build a profile of your spending habits. A crypto-funded virtual card has no such linkage — the card is not connected to your name at the issuer level.
The practical trade-off: virtual cards require loading in advance and do not support overdrafts or bank-linked credit. For online purchases where you know the amount, they are strictly safer than a real card number.
